dignity will make them stay

state correction officers are retiring in record numbers and now leglislation has passed

to allow more liquad vacation days on retirement for extra years served. save your money that wont work. what is wanted and needed is respect and dignity for this dangerous job.

try this instead: hold your prison administrators accountable for managing the prisons with respect.security staff is scorned by civilian leadership which is the new trend.nurses maintenance men and facility stewards becoming superintendants because of civilian commissioners appointed by the governors. treat staff with respect. stop being demeaning to security staff...make them feel like they matter and youll save money. you wont need to offer more vacation days..they will want to work longer.

  1. My best friend is security staff in the DOC a year shy of retirement, and counting the days. What a totally mismanaged department. Civilians heading what, for all intensive purposes, is a para-military organization. Hey lets send a high school principal over to Iraq or Afghanistan to lead our troops. These men are at risk at any time, unappreciated, mistreated by thier civilian co-workers, maligned and not respected while they spend their lives keeping bad people away from good people. They matter...as much as any police officer, yet they have to do 25 years before they can retire.

Lets stop costing the state money on overtime while our men are 'on the road' while vacancies remain in nearby home jails--sometimes for months. There has been a lot of talk about pension padding. The overtime has to be available and it is paid out EVERY week in our jails. Look one step higher-at the administration or Albany, not the workers in the trenches. The holes and vacancies that are not attended to are costing thousands. Yup the DOC needs work and repair, but it has to start at the top. Can we find a few good men brave enough to say ENOUGH!!!

  2. I agree. My husband works out in Albany for 3 years now..Has been told several times the transfer home ( to Buffalo) wont be much longer..it has been over a year and ahalf now since he was told that, To hear of all these "available" spaces and the AMOUNT of new hires I dont understand why they wont move around the men that take their job seriously but would love to be home with family. Its hard enough to be away from your Wife and Children, but to be surrounded in that type of atmosphere just makes it worse!Someone needs to kick their butts in gear and open their eyes to whats really going on here!!...

  4. been working security in new york corrections for seven years and still not home. listen to what i have to say. inmates have free dental, free medical, beautiful gyms with all equipment. they have it better then most taxpayers. how can the state justify doing this. these inmates are in prison because they are a threat to society and they are spoiled by the state in every way possible and we pay for it.
